TAKE A STAND : Every Child A Dalai Lama

Why do we do what we do? What do we live for?

Our work as course creators often focuses on the technical aspects of planning, design, and production. We don’t often explicitly state our core values because the nuts & bolts of making eLearning, from ideas to tangible digital products, can overshadow our why.

The most casual glance at news and social media, points to the fact that values underly everything that one expresses and creates. So, I’d like to let you know what drives me as a human being. And I’d like to get to know likeminded business owners whose work I can support with my skills.

 Who’s the Dalai Lama?

The Dalia Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism and for centuries was also the temporal ruler of Tibet. Tibetan Buddhists believe that each Dalai Lama is the reincarnation of the Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. When the current bodhisattva dies, his spirit reappears as child. According to myth and practice, the spirit chooses a child of 2-3 years old, who the monks install as the Dalai Lama heir apparent, then pour resources into his training and development…. so that he will reach his destiny.

In Sanskrit, a bodhisattva is a person whose essence is perfect knowledge, one who’s capable of reaching nirvana but delays doing so out of compassion, in order to save suffering beings. In Tibetan, Dalai Lama literally means “ocean monk” because he is seen as the vast "ocean of compassion”.

First Dalai Lama : Fact & Metaphor

Let’s read the story of Gedun Drupa, the first Dalai Lama (1391-1474 A.D.) as literal history and metaphor for what’s possible for any anyone today.

Gedun Drupa was born in a cattle pen to nomadic parents and was to be a simple goatherd. When his father died, his mother entrusted the child to a monk uncle, who ran the largest printing press in Tibet and had a huge library that attracted scholars from far and wide. Gedun Drupa was given the best education and exposed to a range of ideas. He was personally tutored by an abbot who took special interest in his progress, he became a gifted student, and was ordained a monk. From his spiritual accomplishments, Gedun Drupa influenced the secular nobility rulers of East Asia, raised lavish funds to found monasteries and schools, to print & publish Buddhist texts, and to support the next generation of monks & scholars. After a lifetime of teaching and leadership, Gedun Drupa died at age 84, recognized as having attained “Buddhahood”.

  Every Child a Dalai Lama

I’ve given birth to three children. At the moment that each one emerged from my body, I gazed in wonder, feeling the glow of deity. A universal experience, that instant connection with a newborn is one of pure possibility. As my children grew, I gave each my best to help them reach their greatness.

My values that ALL children deserve Dalai Lama-like dignity, love, support & resources, underpinned my practice in K-12 education; as a teacher, curriculum supervisor, school principal, and innovative school founder. In my current commercial business work, I believe that ALL adults can learn and transform so they can achieve their goals & dreams.

Vision : Make a Positive Social Impact through Business

I want to change the status quo with my business. Choosing only some people, not ALL, as deserving of our best, results in the tragic societal status quo, where savage inequalities cause sickening, disparate outcomes for people of different genders, races, and ethnicities.

By choosing to hold every child and every client with whom I work as a Dalai Lama, I’m expressing my core values of equity, creativity, innovation & optimism.

The Dalai Lama is an example of what’s possible for humanity if only we had the will to envision the dignity in each person, and take actions consistent with that view.

My mission is to make a positive social impact before my temporal body leaves the earth. If you’re running a company and value making money AND making a positive social impact, I’d like to work with you.

If you’re enjoying this Best in Class Blog for Course Creators, would you help me find my tribe and share this with your friends? Many thanks!
